802.5 Flying the American Flag at Half-Staff

 

A. Background

Furman University wishes to honor persons at their death by flying the American flag at half-staff. The University also wishes to join other institutions in the observance of Memorial Day by flying the flag at half-staff.

 

B. Policy

The flag of the United States will be flown at half-staff on the Furman campus for a designated length of time upon the death of certain federal and state officials and members of the Furman community. The flag will also be flown at half-staff on Memorial Day.

 

C. Guidelines

1. The procedure for placing the flag at half-staff is to raise it to the top of the staff and then lower it to the half-staff position. Before lowering the flag at the end of the day, the flag is again hoisted to the top of the staff.

2. A normal school day is from 8:30 A.M. until 5:00 P.M.

3. The flag will be flown at half-staff for thirty (30) days from day of death for the President of the United States, a former president, or a president-elect.

4. The flag will be flown at half-staff for ten (10) days from day of death for the Vice President of the United States, the Chief Justice or retired Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court, the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, the President of Furman University, or a former president of Furman University.

5. The flag will be flown at half-staff from day of death until the end of school hours on day of interment for an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court, a member of the President of the United States' Cabinet, the majority or minority leader of the United States Senate or House of Representatives, the Governor of South Carolina, a member of the Furman University Board of Trustees, an administrative officer of Furman University, a Furman faculty member, a Furman staff member, or a currently enrolled Furman student.

6. The flag will be flown at half-staff during the day of death and the following day for a United States Senator or a member of the United States House of Representatives.

7. If interment occurs on Saturday, Sunday, or on a holiday the flag will be flown at half-staff on the next regular school day.

8. The Coordinator of the Physical Activities Center is responsible for maintaining the University flag. The Chaplain's Office will notify the Coordinator when a person to be honored has passed away.
