802.5 Flying the Flags at Half-Staff at Furman University

 

A. Background

Furman University wishes to honor persons at their death by flying the appropriate flag at half-staff. 

 

B. Policy

The flag of the United States will be flown at half-staff on the Furman campus as set forth in the United States Flag Code, United State Code, Title 4, Chapter 1.

The Furman flag will be flown at half-staff as outlined below or at the discretion of the President of Furman University.

 

C. Guidelines

1. The procedure for placing the Furman flag at half-staff is to raise it to the top of the staff and then lower it to the half-staff position. Before lowering the flag at the end of the specified period, the flag is again hoisted to the top of the staff.

2. A normal school day is from 8:30 A.M. until 5:00 P.M.

3. The Furman flag will be flown at half-staff for ten (10) days from day of death for the President of Furman University, or a former president of Furman University.

4. The Furman flag will be flown at half-staff for three (3) days from day of death for a member of the Furman University Board of Trustees, an administrative officer of Furman University, a Furman faculty member, a Furman staff member, or a currently enrolled Furman student.

5. If interment occurs on Saturday, Sunday, or on a holiday the Furman flag will be flown at half-staff on the next regular school day.

6. The University Police Department is responsible for raising and lowering the American flag and the Director of Student Activities and Trone Student Center is responsible for the Furman University flag.  Chief of University Police will subscribe to an internet source to be notified when the American flag should be lowered to half-staff.  The Chaplain's Office will notify the Director of Student Activities and Trone Student Center when a person has passed away that should be honored with the lowering of the Furman flag.  The Furman President's office is responsible for replacing worn flags and for maintenance and repair of the flag poles.
